What is a UUID?

A UUID (Universally Unique Identifier), also known as GUID (Globally Unique Identifier), is a 128-bit number used to uniquely identify information in computer systems.

UUID Versions

  • UUID v1: Based on timestamp and MAC address. Useful when you need time-ordered identifiers.
  • UUID v4: Randomly generated. Most commonly used for general purposes.

Format

xxxxxxxx-xxxx-Mxxx-Nxxx-xxxxxxxxxxxx

Where M is the version (1 or 4) and N indicates the variant.
